|---|---|---|---|
| TRIAC แบบตัดเฟส | AC mains input | Chopped AC sine wave | Retrofit residential dimming, two-wire circuits |
| 0-10V analog | Driver control port | Low-voltage DC signal | Commercial and office lighting |
| PWM / DC dimming | DC output side | Pulsed or varied DC | LED strips, constant voltage systems |
At boqi we build drivers for all three approaches — TRIAC dimmable, 0-10V dimmable, and DALI dimmable LED drivers — precisely because different projects need control at different points in that chain.
Here is a mistake that has cost more than one of our distributor clients a callback: assuming that because a driver says “TRIAC dimmable,” every TRIAC dimmer will work equally well with it. That is not necessarily true.
Check five things before pairing: leading-edge vs. trailing-edge support, the dimmer’s minimum load requirement, the driver’s holding and latching current behavior, startup performance at low dim settings, and the tested dimming range. The dimmer plus driver combination determines real field performance, not either device alone.
I have seen two LED drivers connected to the same TRIAC dimmer behave completely differently. One dims smoothly to 5%. Another flickers below 40%. A third refuses to turn on reliably after a power interruption. Same dimmer, same mains, different results. LED driver compatibility is a system-level property, and it depends on how the driver’s input stage interprets and tolerates the phase-cut waveform.
The compatibility factors that actually matter
Why it matters | What to ask your supplier |
|---|---|---|
| Leading vs. trailing edge | Forward phase dimmers stress driver input differently than reverse phase | Which edge types has the driver been tested with? |
Legacy dimmers were built for 40W+ incandescent loads; a 7W LED may fall below the threshold | What is the dimmer’s minimum wattage, and does the driver present enough load? |
| Holding/latching current | If the driver draws too little current, the TRIAC drops out mid-cycle | Does the driver include a bleeder or active load circuit? |
| Input capacitance | High capacitance causes inrush spikes and misfiring | Is the input stage designed for phase-cut waveforms? |
| Power factor | Poor PF distorts how the dimmer sees the load | What is the PF at full and dimmed output? |
Marketing says “dimmable”; projects need real numbers | What is the tested range, e.g. 5%–100%? |
How we specify compatibility at the factory level
For our OEM and engineering clients, we never write just “TRIAC dimmable” on a datasheet. We specify phase-cut compatible together with the supported dimmer type and a tested dimming range, and we maintain a tested-dimmer list for key export markets like Australia, the UK, and Germany. Modern low-wattage installations sometimes also need an active load stabilization module 5 wired in parallel with the LEDs. It simulates a resistive load so the TRIAC does not drop out at low dim levels. If your project mixes many small fixtures on one dimmer, ask about this before installation, not after the flicker complaints arrive.
Troubleshooting flicker reports is a routine part of our after-sales support, and over the years a clear pattern has emerged: most failures trace back to four physical causes, not to a “bad driver.”
Flicker usually comes from TRIAC dropout below the holding current, mismatched leading-edge waveforms confusing the driver’s detection circuit, parasitic capacitance in long wiring runs, or unstable mains frequency. Fixing it means matching the dimmer type, adding a bleeder or active load, and verifying the tested dimming range.
Flicker-free performance is not luck. It is the result of a driver input stage designed to read a distorted, chopped waveform correctly, cycle after cycle. When something in that chain breaks down, the symptoms are visible and often audible. Let me break down the four root causes we diagnose most often.
Cause 1: TRIAC dropout at low load
Legacy leading-edge dimmers need a minimum current to keep the TRIAC latched. A small LED driver may draw so little that the TRIAC turns off mid-cycle, then refires. The light stutters or shimmers at deep dim levels. The fix is a driver with a proper bleeder circuit, or an external active load module in parallel.
Cause 2: Parasitic capacitance leaks
In complex residential wiring, long cable runs carry parasitic capacitance. That capacitance can leak enough current to keep the TRIAC gate partially open. The result: LEDs glow faintly or never turn off fully. Shorter runs, correct cable routing, or a driver with higher leakage tolerance solve this.
Cause 3: Dielectric stress and audible buzzing
Leading-edge control produces a near-instantaneous voltage rise at every firing point. That sharp edge physically stresses the dielectric material in the driver’s input capacitors. Over time this manifests as an audible singing or buzzing sound. Quality input filtering and capacitors rated for phase-cut duty reduce both the noise and the long-term fatigue.
Cause 4: Frequency-dependent misfiring
On generator power or unstable grids — a real concern in several of the Southeast Asian markets we ship to — the mains may drift slightly off 50/60Hz. TRIAC timing circuits that assume a fixed frequency then fire at slightly wrong angles each cycle, producing a rhythmic breathing or pulsing of the light. Drivers with adaptive zero-crossing detection handle this drift far better than basic designs.

TRIAC dimming is AC phase-cut control at the input; the driver rectifies that chopped waveform into DC afterward. Match your dimmer and driver as a tested pair, and dimming problems disappear.
